Sherry
Ginn earned both her MA (1984) and PhD (1988) in General-Experimental
Psychology from the University of South Carolina.
She completed post-doctoral training at the East Carolina University
School of Medicine and taught at East Carolina University for a number of years,
during which time she also enrolled in several classes in the Women’s Studies
Program. Dr. Ginn taught at Wingate University from 1999 – 2006, serving as
the Director of the Women’s Studies program while there. She currently teaches
at Rowan-Cabarrus Community College and is in the planning stages for developing
a Gender and Women’s Studies Center at the school. She has published numerous
articles in the fields of neuroscience and psychology. Dr. Ginn’s book,
entitled Our Space, Our Place: Women
in the Worlds of Science Fiction Television,
was published in 2005. She is
the member and/or officer of a number of professional organizations, including
the International Society for the History of the Neurosciences (President,
2008-2009; Secretary, 2010-), the Popular Culture Association (Chair, Science
Fiction and Fantasy Section, 2009-2012), the Southeastern Women’s Studies
Association (Treasurer), and the North Carolina Writers’ Network. Current
projects include an essay on the Doctor
Who companion Sarah Jane Smith, cinematic intersections of neuroscience with
the Frankenstein myth, Sexing
Science Fiction (with co-editor Michael Cornelius), and Farscape
(with co-editor Ryan Neighbors). She lives in North Carolina, with her husband
of many years, and her new cat, Madison. Her favorite hobbies are reading and
watching science fiction, horror, and murder mysteries. She loves to travel and
laments that there is not enough time or money to do as much as she would like.
